Cincinnati landmark rooted in Organic Architecture
The Studio of Terry Brown
The Studio of Terry Brown
Wahopi was designed by Terry Brown, American architect, as his studio and private retreat. Constructed between 1992 to 2016, Wahopi exemplifies the characteristics of Organic Architecture. Emphasizing experience and sensation, each piece of the design plays to the whole. It was Brown's desire to create a "sincere relationship between two-dimensional pattern and three-dimensional form."
Organic Architecture is a style that takes influence from the ideas and teachings of Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Bruce Goff. Embraced by Western and Midwest architects, like Terry Brown, who turned their backs on the traditional architectural establishment, use of non-orthogonal forms and structural expression are encouraged. Wahopi is a powerful union of art and nature.
Currently, Wahopi and The Studio remain a private property. The purpose of this site is to celebrate Organic Architecture and Terry Brown's vision. By acknowledging the collaborative efforts of the craftsmen, and sharing the journey of maintaining Wahopi for future generations, the hope is to grow the appreciation for, and enhance the community connection with this Cincinnati landmark.
