The siding along the South West exposure had deteriorated. Major renovation was required to preserve and protect the studio from water.
Thomas Hogan, of Hogan Construction, accepted the challenge of honoring the architecture while improving the structure.
After months of work by the master craftsman, the Cedar siding is nearly completed to exact measure.
Individual aluminum caps were cut and fitted to each Cedar board. The extra detail ensures that the siding and roof are now working together for drainage.
The siding is restored to the original architectural detail. Over time, the sun and rain will silver the newly applied siding to match the rest of The Studio.
This incredibly unique architectural element of Terry Brown's Wahopi is now better than ever. The Studio is protected from the weather to last as a statement of Organic Architecture.
The stairs are a major focal point and serve as a grand entrance to the cone. Years of South West exposure had taken a toll.
Rick Wolf, and his brother Joe Wolf, took lead on the project. Rick was part of the original team to build Wahopi in the 1990's.
After days of hand sanding and scraping by the team, the Cedar shingles are protected and the stairs prepped for paint.
The September weather in Cincinnati was perfect and we were able to paint in full sun and mid to high 80's. We used commercial spraying and hand painting.
The stairs returned to their original color and vibrancy. The striking sculptural gate, designed by Paul Lashua, adds to the architectural detail.
Like so many design features of Wahopi, the elements of Organic Architecture are on full display. Now restored they are spectacularly ready for many years ahead.
